The energy future of Brussels’ existing buildings : between preservation and performance

Proceedings of one-day semminar on 11 December 2014

One-day semminar on 11 December 2014 - Royal Library of Belgium, 1000 Brussels

Thermal insulation improvement works have become one of the major issues in projects to renovate and restore existing buildings within the Brussels-Capital Region. For Brussels Urban Development, the question therefore arises of how to act in a way that is adequate and which allows the various issues of sustainable development to be reconciled: energy efficiency, preserving the heritage value of the buildings and the urban landscape, economic constraints, etc.

The purpose of this one-day seminar was to explore this issue in a cross-sectoral manner. Starting with an analysis of Brussels’ existing buildings and by bringing together various actors from the public and private spheres, experts, scientists, etc. from the fields of energy, the environment, architecture, heritage conservation, construction, etc. Brussels Urban Development has opted to compare points of view against each other and give value to knowledge and practice in order to fuel a debate that is aimed at making well-considered choices.

The texts are published in the language of the respective speaker.
